Zakat

Zakat

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam. It cannot be given to anyone except following people from eight categories specified by Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى‎  in His Book:

“Zakat expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakat] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveller – an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise” [at-Tawbah 9:60].

Islam orders every sane, adult Muslim who owns wealth equals or over the amount of Nisab – he or she must pay 2.5% of that wealth as Zakat.

What is

Nisab?

The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before they become eligible to pay Zakat. This amount is often referred to as the nisab threshold.

Gold and silver are the two values used to calculate the nisab threshold. The nisab is the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver.
